The band was born under the name New Crossbones, led by the late Kris Chali, in the town of Choma in Zambia's Southern Province in 1978, and from such humble beginnings, have gone on to become the most successful band in the history of our country's music. In May 2003, Kris died and everyone thought that was the end of the band but they have proved everyone wrong as they unleash their first project after his death called Mangona Kulila under the leadership of Fraser Chilembo.
Over the years, Kris Chali had led his band through tours of three continents. They have been featured at the WOMAD Festival in London, and at shows from Korea to Libya and Moscow to America.
As befits one of Africa's most prolific bands, Amayenge continue to be incredibly popular at home and abroad. In Africa, they have done shows in Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe. |
